What ingredients are in Sabão products and why?

I have often thought about what is the point of creating a business when there is already a well-known leader in that particular market, plus plenty of other independent businesses doing the same thing.

Who would buy from little old me?

Old – there’s the operative word. When I was conducting market research, it seems like the biggest bath bomb players target the young, student population.

But where do the customers who used to use these bath bombs go? I was one of them, so why was I not using the same colourful and sweet smelling products? Because I had grown older and wiser to what was in them – somewhat. But I guess when I looked around it just was not appealing to what I needed in my 30’s.

Why soak in a bath tub which had no beneficial properties to my skin or sanity? And now, where time is more important than before – I wanted a hell of a lot more out of the little, precious time I had in the bath.

So what is the point of difference for Sabão – in our products you will find;

Essential Oils – I wanted fragrances which were derived/inspired from nature and had a positive effect on wellbeing. I often find myself spraying lavender to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere, but there are so many other oils which are equally as good and unheard of. So in the Wellness Bath Bomb Collection I tried and tested lots of essential oil combinations to make sure that 15 -20 minute soak is well worth it to both mind and body!

Sweet Almond Oil – Our whole family has dry, temperamental skin. My mum has always sworn by Sweet Almond Oil, be it applied on your face, hair or rubbed on your body. Containing Vitamin D & E, minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium it’s such versatile oil to use. It is also packed with antioxidants which produces a firming effect on the outmost layer of the skin, revitalises it and keeps it moistened. If you’re a bit lazy like me with applying creams, or oils on your body, this is the quickest and easiest way to get that moisture into your skin.

Organic Cocoa Butter –  I absolutely love and adore the texture of raw cocoa butter, once it’s in your hand it releases natural gourmand scented oils which instantly makes you want to eat chocolate. However, apart from smelling great it known for deep hydration, reducing stretch marks and is high in antioxidants which fight off free radical damage which can cause skin aging, dark patches, and dull skin.

Kaolin Clay – Don’t be fooled by the name, this is actually a mineral formed over many millions of years by the hydrothermal decomposition of granite rocks. What does it do for you in the bath – this is great for sensitive skin! It stimulates circulation whilst detoxifying any impurities in the skin. It soothes and nourishes the skin and it absorbs excess sebum whilst keeping the water and oil balance intact. So a great all-rounder for those who have dry to oily skin types.

Magnesium Sulphate – Otherwise widely known as Epsom salts, these are the secret stars the Bath Salts Collection. As well as easing muscle aches and pains, it apparently reduces bloating. Which on the days I over-eat I then like to then sit in some bath salts and hope that any excess bloating and water retention are being removed. The scientific reason why Magnesium sulphate is so effective is that word we all studied whilst prodding potatoes in science – Reverse osmosis. Toxins and excess fluids are drawn out and all the goodness from the bath salts and bombs are absorbed into the skin.

Pretty simple when you look at it, but personally I’d rather have the ingredients above in my bath than other artificial ingredients. Having looked at a major competitor I saw they use SLS in some of their bath bombs to create the bubbles. Which is a big no, no in my books.

In the next blog instalment I’ll look at Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) vs Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) and why I’ve chosen SLSa.
